TIPS FOR SANITIZING VEHICLES AND AIRCRAFT
During this particularly challenging time, it is imperative that Civil Air Patrol maintain a level of operational readiness to support lifesaving missions we may be called upon to perform. Keeping aircrew trained and current is a big part of maintaining operational readiness. Consequently steps must be taken to minimize the risk of contamination from high-touch surfaces in CAP aircraft.
Lt. Col. Gregg Olsen, California Wing health services officer as well as an internist and oncologist, has recorded a video on how best to sanitize aircraft and vehicles during the COVID19 pandemic. Olsen discusses possible sources for supplies like disposable gloves – such as stores that sell building supplies, beauty supplies, paint and lumber – and also demonstrates necessary steps for cleaning planes, vehicles and equipment and then disposing of the cleaning materials used. Auto parts stores are another potential source for disposable gloves.
TIPS FOR DISINFECTING GARMIN AVIONICS
USE EXTREME CAUTION WHEN CLEANING AVIONICS
Those cleaning cockpits should take care not to get harsh chemicals such as those containing ammonia or bleach on avionics screens. Spray chemicals used for interior cleaning toward the floor and use extreme caution not to get overspray on the avionics. Avionics bezels, buttons and displays are not waterproof and should only be cleaned using an approved disinfectant sprayed on a clean, soft cloth. Garmin avionics with plastic anti-reflective (AR) coatings (e.g., GTX 3xx, GNS 430/530) should only be cleaned with a solution of soap and water. Garmin avionics with glass AR coatings (e.g., G1000, GMX-200, GTN 6xx/7xx) can be disinfected with a solution of isopropyl alcohol. Never use cleaners containing ammonia on or near an avionics display.
